  • Are you wondering where capital would be best spent on your existing assets?
  • Are you interested in finding out what others like or do not like about the funcationality, design, or structure of your building(s)?
  • Are you interested in quantifying qualitative design concepts in an easy and systematic way?

If you answered YES to any of these questions above, Design Quality Indicator (DQI) training and certification is for you.

In conjunction with Realcomm 2009—REboot.09: Turning Challenges into Opportunities —DQI USA will host a special introduction and training session for the Design Quality Indicator (DQI), now being launched in North America after firmly establishing itself in the UK since 2003.

DQI USA is a software and consulting company. The company is dedicated to establishing the DQI (Design Quality Indicator) as the building industry’s first statistically validated assessment tool to objectively measure design quality. The company has an exclusive license to commercialize and distribute the DQI in North America.

According to Marc Sallette, the founder of DQI USA, DQI is a valuable tool for a variety of real estate professionals, from those within a corporate real estate department to the myriad service providers that advise and counsel companies on the acquisition, development, redevelopment and leasing of space. Following the training session, individuals are certified in the program and able to use it as a means for assisting clients.

“The real benefit of the indicator is its ability of brokers, architects, engineers, developers and other key influence sources to use information it has captured from a variety of stakeholders to guide the decision making process of those acquiring, owning, managing and developing commercial and institutional projects,” Sallette added.

The DQI provides critical metrics—hundreds of data points—to manage design quality and predict success prior to constructing and delivering the finished project to mitigate unnecessary costs and delays. Through the administration of a brief questionnaire, individual subjective perceptions are immediately translated into objective measurable results. The quantification of these “design intangibles” is a unique feature to the DQI.

“In certain situations, gut instinct’s have their place in the decision making process,” Sallette added. “Yet when millions—even tens of millions—of dollars are at stake, it is nice to have a tool that can assess the effectiveness of improvements and justify facility expenditures to management.”

The introductory training session will be held from 1 pm to 6 pm on June 22, the eve of Realcomm 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, 151 E. Wacker Drive. Participants will learn all about DQI, including how to facilitate the indicator and how to market the program.

Since the launch of the tool in the US last Fall, the company has trained over 60 professionals in the use of the DQI in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. New York City’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC), is the company’s first large-scale client. It adopted the DQI as a required step in the DDC’s design process. The DQI was first administered to over 300 respondents on $320 million worth of DDC’s public building projects.

Following the training session, registrants have the option to attend Realcomm’s VIP Reception. They also are being offered discounted registration to the Realcomm conference, which runs on Tuesday and Wednesday. DQI is a sponsor of Realcomm 2009, which is themed REboot.09: Turning Challenges into Opportunities.

“DQI USA and what it represents is precisely what Realcomm is all about—bringing useful, state-of-the-art ideas and tools to market so that service providers can have a more complete tool box and corporate professionals can be well-informed decision makers,” said Geoffrey Kasselman, president, Op2Mize and Conference Ambassador for Realcomm 2009. “Given the current conditions, in real estate and the general economy, DQI can be a tool that will be invaluable to professionals throughout our industry.”

In addition to hosting the training session … DQI also is sponsoring the “Turning Challenges into Opportunities” educational track of the Realcomm 2009 Conference.

The DQI training session costs $750, and can be discounted for smaller firms or for large firms sending multiple people. The company is focused on enabling widespread use of the construction industry’s first statistically validated design assessment tool, the DQI (Design Quality Indicator). The company was formed in 2006 to commercialize the DQI following its success in the UK, where it has already been applied to over 900 projects by more than 10,000 people.

No longer is coming in on budget and on time good enough. Now both the public and private sectors are being required to prove they are delivering buildings that are “high quality” as well. The DQI helps isolate and benchmark this elusive third pillar: design quality, enabling the delivery of high performance buildings that are innovative, fit-for purpose, foster productive work environments and are sustainable in the broadest sense.

DQI USA aims to create a nationwide network of DQI Facilitators in the US and establish the DQI as the industry standard for delivering high performing buildings. Available as a web-based tool, the DQI enables procurement teams to holistically define and evaluate design quality at all key stages in the development process. The quantification of “design intangibles” is a unique feature to the DQI enabling the delivery of fundamentally better and more sustainable buildings.

The company was founded with a vision that better designed buildings are fundamentally more valuable and a better use of resources. History shows that poor design results in high costs and low value for money. By capitalizing on the economic, social and environmental benefits of improved building design, the case can be made to unlock potential value, increase economic activity and enhance productivity. Evidence shows that patients recover faster in better designed hospitals, children score higher in quality designed schools, and well designed neighborhoods result in lower crime. In short, investing in high quality buildings can improve the welfare of business and society.
